Learn about the Myopia Pandemic and how progressive myopia can lead to blinding eye conditions. To learn about why myopia is getting worse and treatment options to slow down myopia – check out our playlist:

The myopia pandemic is a growing concern in the field of eye health, affecting millions of individuals worldwide. Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, is a condition where distant objects appear blurry while close objects can be seen clearly. This condition is not just a minor inconvenience; it has become a significant public health issue often referred to as the myopia epidemic or the myopia pandemic.

In simple terms, myopia involves the elongation of the eyeball, causing light rays to focus in front of the retina rather than directly on it. As the axial length of the eyeball grows, the tissues of the eyeball can stretch, causing an increased risk of eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts, myopic maculopathy, and retinal detachment.

Effective myopia control and myopia management strategies are essential to combat the myopia pandemic. These include the use of corrective myopia glasses, contact lenses, and in some cases, pharmaceutical interventions. The goal is not only to correct vision but also to slow down the progression of myopia.

For those wondering, “what is nearsightedness?” and “why is my myopia increasing?”, the answers lie in understanding the factors that contribute to myopia progression, including genetic predisposition and environmental influences like prolonged near work and insufficient outdoor activities.
