Your brain depends on a continuous supply of oxygen and glucose delivered through healthy blood flow, and after hours of sitting, working at a computer, or looking down at your phone, simply changing position and moving your body can make you feel more awake and refreshed. In this video, Dr. Alan Mandell demonstrates a simple 10–15 second movement you can try while sitting near the edge of a chair: place your feet securely on the floor, gently lean forward, allow your arms to relax downward, and lower your head comfortably before slowly returning to an upright position. Changes in posture influence your cardiovascular and autonomic nervous systems, and movement after prolonged sitting can help activate the muscles of the lower body and alter circulation. Some people may experience a temporary sensation of warmth or increased alertness after changing position, although this technique should not be considered a treatment for impaired circulation, brain fog, or a neurological or cardiovascular condition. Always return upright slowly because rapid positional changes can cause dizziness or lightheadedness, particularly in people susceptible to changes in blood pressure. If bending forward is uncomfortable, Dr. Mandell also demonstrates a gentler alternative using the calf muscles while seated. Never perform this maneuver if it makes you dizzy, faint, short of breath, causes chest pain, vision changes, severe headache, weakness, numbness, or other concerning symptoms. People with significant cardiovascular disease, uncontrolled blood pressure, a history of fainting, certain eye conditions, or other medical conditions that make head-down positioning inadvisable should speak with their healthcare professional before trying it. Most importantly, don’t underestimate the value of regularly getting up and moving throughout the day. Your brain and body were designed to move. Try this simple 10-second reset after a long period of sitting and notice how you feel.
