Self-Care: What It Is and What It Isn’t

Self-care is something that is on a lot of our minds and definitely lives in the buzzword space. I also think it gets thrown around a little loosely.

So, what is it? To me, self care is referring to behaviors that are health-promoting, and I mean health from a holistic perspective taking into account mental, physical, emotional, spiritual health and so much more. Self-care is any behavior or mental act that helps us to live a slightly better life. Our needs for self-care are going to vary from day to day.

However, self-care is not just relaxing or doing something to treat or reward ourself. It may look like this sometimes when that is what we truly need, but most of the time it is going to be doing something we don’t like or don’t want to do because we know it’s good for us.
