My First Iftar in Morocco Broke Me (In the Best Way)
Date: 2026-03-13 19:12:34
Join me in Morocco for *my very first iftar during Ramadan*, as a Christian *traveler* invited into a local family-style meal that completely changes how I see food, faith, and grief. We start in the streets of Morocco, walking to the mosque to hear the peaceful call to prayer echo over the main square, then head back to a humble iftar spread prepared with so much love by Mustafa, a hard-of-hearing chef who signs, and Alibaba, a joyful rug seller and professional host. Together we break the fast with Moroccan harira soup, fruit salad, mint tea without sugar, avocado and fruit smoothies, seasoned rice, carrots, potatoes, tuna, and boiled eggs – a modest but incredibly satisfying meal that tastes like it was made from the heart.
As we eat, we talk about sugar, health, handmade bowls that are “perfectly imperfect,” and why hospitality in Morocco feels different. I reflect on #Quran verses about feeding the traveler and Islamic hospitality as a commandment, then connect it to the Bible in Acts where early believers broke bread with glad and sincere hearts. The conversation moves from food to culture to faith, but the table holds it all together.
This trip is also deeply personal. I’m grieving my mother, who loved gathering family around food more than anything. Sitting at this Ramadan iftar with new Moroccan friends, I feel her presence again and remember that food is memory, love, and the people we carry with us, even when they’re gone. By the end of the night, it’s clear: no matter our religion, culture, or language, we can still meet at the same table, break bread together, and thank God – Alhamdulillah.
If you love honest travel stories, Moroccan food, Ramadan experiences, and the way hospitality can heal, this episode is for you.
